Rob started Latin School in Groningen and completed Latin School in Arnhem. He went to Medical School at the University of Leiden. He did his internal medicine residencies in the University of Groningen Medical Center. He sub specialized in medical oncology. He defended his PhD thesis at the University of Groningen on the subject of ‘Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the nephrotic syndrome’
From 1985 till 2010 Rob was internist-oncologist in the Westeinde Hospital in The Hague. Rob: “In 1986 my colleagues and I founded a HIV/AIDS clinic in our hospital. In 2007 I choose to become a ‘scen-physician’, the Dutch term for the independent physician, that is different from the family physician of the patient to address medical and legal aspects of euthanasia.”
In 2012 Rob retires from clinical work, but continues his work as scen-physician, vice-chairman of the Complaints Committee of the Reinier de Graaf Hospital in Delft, the Netherlands and a board member of BTK, a foundation to encourage physical activities during oncological treatments.
“I married Liesbeth Muller in 1972; we have three daughters, three sons-in –law and six grandchildren. In addition to being a ‘supporter’ of my immediate family, I am also a supporter of the ADO professional soccer club of The Hague. I enjoy playing golf and bridge, but above all Liesbeth and I are active hikers in The Netherlands and in the mountains.”
