Hal Droogleever Fortuyn goes to the same Latin School in Groningen as Huib and Rob Vriesendorp. He studies medicine at the University of Amsterdam, but does his internship Gynecology in Paramaribo in Surinam.
After becoming an MD, Hal is a locum tenens Family Practice physician for a year. Next he starts to work in Marin County, California, USA, in the Height- Ashbury Free Clinic, San Francisco en passes his ECFMG exam. In San Raphael, California psychiatrist David Rosen teaches Hal ‘Primal Scream Therapy’.
On his return to the Netherlands Hal specializes in Psychiatry in the University Medical Center of Groningen. With colleagues he starts an addiction clinic in Wolfheze, initially in an old piggery.
Hal moves to Zaans Medical Center to practice hospital psychiatry. He comes a member of the hospital staff board and joins the Board of the Section Hospital Psychiatry of the Dutch Association for Psychiatry.
In 2011 he has become Head of the Psychiatric Consult Service in the Radboud Medical Center in Nijmegen. He defends his thesis entitled:’ ‘Narcolepsy, aspects of the psychiatric phenotype’. He is loyal attendant of the meetings of the National Dutch patient association for Narcolepsy (NvN), remains a consultant for the sleep-awake center of SEIN, Heemstede, and for narcolepsy related research in Kempenhaeghe, Heeze, the Netherlands.
Hal is married to Marijke, has four daughters, three son-in-laws and four grandchildren.
